Being a business owner usually means you got used to sort things out on your own at the beginning, right? Then, you finally managed to grow enough to hire some people, and, somehow, you still feel everything is staying on your to-do list.
Prioritizing, staying focused and delegating are 3 keywords for you. In order to continue growing your business, you have to get rid of habit of doing everything on your own. This is why you hired people to work for you, right? I read somewhere one amazing text: ” Employees work for the boss. The boss doesn’t work for employees. The sooner you realize the reason for having employees is to get them to do what you want them to do, allow you to grow your business, help you to make more money, and let you work on your top priorities the sooner you’ll start getting your business to work.”
Business owner`s everyday struggle
Now, let`s visualize one situation: You came to work Monday morning, ready to rock and roll your to-do list. You really organized this week: you have your must-do, should-do, could-do and do-not-need-to-do lists. Opened your email and there it is: long list of unanswered emails, and on top of that your phone started ringing. Start resolving one thing at the time, and before you know it, your work day is done. None of items on your list have been checked, and again, you feel so stressed out and exhausted. Sounds familiar?
There is no enough hours in a day. Successful business can not be built on “good intention”, nor on micro-managing.
In one of our posts Why you need a business consultant, we spoke about 4. very important aspects that always need to be taken care of, that a business consultant can help you with, but you can do it on your own too!
Focus!
Setting your priorities straight is most important job you have every day. And your top priority has to be business development and constant growth. “The basic purpose of a business is to make a living for the owner. – Ed Pendarvis”
Some questions to ask yourself every time a “fire” pops out:
- Do I enjoy this?
- Will it generate income?
- Is it obligation?
- Can it be done by someone else?
Enjoying doing something? Place it on your could- do list! Don`t enjoy it, go to next question. If it generates income, consider if someone else could do it. If not, place it on your must- do list, and if yes, delegate! Check if it`s obligation if it doesn`t generate income. If yes, place on your must-do list. If no, place on do-not-do list.
Doing this every day will help you filter that pile of tasks on your to do list, so you will have much more time for important things.
In some of out next texts, we will talk more about organization and setting up and implementing processes, so you can continue clearing up your schedule for what matters!
